Wipe off salt, dirt, and slush after each wear with a damp cloth, since road salt can stain and dry out materials over time. For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water and a mild soap on the exterior, then wipe away residue. Let the boots air-dry away from direct heat, such as radiators or vents, which can crack or warp the material. Removable liners can be taken out to dry fully between wears.

The warmest boots combine two things: a higher insulation weight and taller boot height. Heavier insulation traps more body heat, which matters for standing still at the bus stop or in the snow. A taller shaft covers more of the ankle and lower leg, sealing out cold and keeping snow from sneaking in. For the coldest days, look for a snug top closure and a waterproof shell so warmth is not lost to dampness.

Sizing up slightly is common and sensible, since it leaves room for a warm sock and a little growth over the season. Aim for about a thumb's width of space at the toe. Too much room, however, works against her: an oversized boot slides at the heel, making walking harder and reducing stability on slippery ground. The goal is comfortable extra space, not a boot she has to shuffle to keep on.

Start with the heel-slip test: with the boot on, hold her heel down and check that it stays seated without lifting more than slightly when she takes a step. Then do a toe-room check by pressing the boot's tip while she stands, leaving roughly a thumb's width between her longest toe and the end. Have her walk a few steps to confirm nothing pinches or rubs. Always test with the sock she will wear.

Rubber shells are naturally waterproof and resist slush, wet snow, and puddles well, which makes them useful in mild or wet winter weather. On their own, though, rubber offers little warmth. For toddlers, pair a rubber-shelled boot with a warm insulating liner or a thick sock so small feet stay cozy and dry. In deep cold, a fully insulated snow boot generally keeps feet warmer than an uninsulated rubber pair.
